Today we’re introducing you to the craftsmen behind our homes. Playing the role of “Dual Quarterbacks”, Tim and Rich Larsen are the epicenter of our construction team. These twin brothers oversee everything that happens on site and work in conjunction with our designers to bring all of our homes to fruition.
From laying out foundations to making sure every stud is aligned perfectly to taking time to craft every finish detail, Tim and Rich are well beyond what we think of as a “normal” contractor. They are true craftsmen who take pride in their work and love what they do every day.
I had a chance to speak with Tim and Rich last week at a job site meeting at Waterfalls Properties where they are continuing to move forward with construction on TinkerBox. Marica McKeel joined us as well…
What was your favorite detail to build in the Lantern Ridge House?
Tim: I’d have to say it was framing the big overhang, the big prow in the front of the building. Also the metal work and structure… the challenge of getting all the beams and everything all in line.
Rich: My favorite was the wood ceiling that continues from the living room to outside over the deck.
Marica: I think that might be one of my favorite parts too. Everyone who visits the house comments on how they love the wood ceiling feature. And I remember how you guys built the LVLs rather than simply putting three together, you actually put them together like this (holds hand at angle) because of the angle of the roof.
Tim: Oh yeah, that’s right. We staggered them with a 12-degree pitch so we didn’t have to cut them. That was the first time we have done that.
Rich: Yes, that worked out well.
Tim: We’re always trying to develop better or more efficient ways of doing things. Every day we are learning something new or finding a better way to build.
So what about the house you are working on now, TinkerBox? Any challenges or anything new?
Rich: The overhang on the chimney.
Tim: Yeah, the overhang on the chimney is the biggest cantilever we’ve ever done.
Rich: Oh yeah, it’s definitely got the record.
Marica: That’s what our engineer calls “hanging from sky hooks”. Wow, very exciting that we’re building your largest cantilever.
Tim: Also, the corner window in the living room where the window seat will be, that was a first. To have no structure in the corner. That’s another big feature.
Rich: And the charred cedar siding is new for us too.
Marica: Oh right, the siding. Did you guys have any trouble with the tongue and groove because we are burning it?
Tim: Nope, they go right together easily. A lot easier than if you had painted.
Marica: Oh that’s great.
What do you guys like best about working with our team?
Tim: Creating a house from nothing but plans on paper is an experience we really enjoy. And we love the chance to explore new creative techniques. Plus, everything is a pleasure when you have great people to work with.
Marica: Well, that’s my favorite part about working with you guys. It’s always great working with great people.
Tim: Also, when we first start at a new site, working around the trees and staking out the house is always fun. Marica is usually telling us what trees she doesn’t want us to cut down. It’s a fun challenge trying to fit the house in around the trees.
What do you like best about working in the Hudson Valley?
Tim: We love working in this area. All the lots up here are just beautiful pieces of property – one is better than the next. Just being outside and getting to enjoy the nature while we work is such a bonus.
Marica: I really love coming up here and getting a chance to work in the Hudson Valley. It’s such a refreshing change from New York City – the fresh air, the mountain views and all the animals. We have twin fawns living on the property and it’s such a treat to see them.
What do you guys like to do for fun when you are not building houses?
Rich/Tim (practically in unison): Hike, kayak, sail, spend a lot of time on the Hudson River camping out. Just spending time outdoors.
Marica: Which reminds me of what you said Tim when you first saw the marble we picked out for the kitchen island in the Lantern House.
Tim: Right, yeah it looks like the Hudson River, frozen in the winter, when we’re kayaking on it.
What do you think about our new property The Cliffs at Kaaterskill? Have you been to the site?
Tim: I actually camped out there. It’s a beautiful site. Lots of birch trees and unbelievable views.
Rich: Yeah, we can’t wait to get started up there!
