We are still reminiscent of two weekends ago, July 22-24 when we went exploring different galleries, artist studios, and museums for Upstate Art Weekend. It was such a beautiful weekend filled with learning, admiring, and of course so much art! While we weren’t able to make any stops on the Friday of the weekend fair, we had jam packed days both Saturday and Sunday. Before seeing any of the art, it was a challenging task to figure out how to plan each day and where we wanted to go. We found it helpful to look at the Upstate Art Weekend map to figure out where in each town we wanted to visit. Once we figured out our itinerary, the art-filled adventures began! In this post we’ll share some of the highlights from the weekend.
Local Adventures: Upstate Art Weekend
Saturday
Foreland Catskill
On Saturday we started at Foreland Catskill, a space that hosts exhibitions, artist studios, events all encompassed in historic buildings. On Saturday, they were showing works curated by DOCUMENT, a commercial gallery located in Chicago specializing in photography, film, and media based art. This group show was full of color, texture, and form with each artist having a distinct voice through their work.
Beattie Powers Place
To enjoy art and architecture, we then headed to Beattie Powers Place which was showing works from Richard Saja and Matt Hill. Richard Saja’s work had a dynamic conversation with the building nodding to toile wallpaper and textiles while Matt Hill’s work spoke to the nature of the Hudson Valley.
The view from in front of the house overlooks a beautiful view. It was a stunning place to pause for a break before continuing on.
Turley Gallery
We then made a quick stop at a new gallery in Hudson called the Turley Gallery. The works here for the show “Candy Flipping” were psychedelic and colorful.
September Gallery at Kinderhook Knitting Mill
Next up was a visit to the new September Gallery at the Kinderhook Knitting Mill. A favorite from this show was a painting by Reggie Madison. We actually got to meet Reggie on our way out of (and his way into) the gallery opening which was a highlight of the weekend.
Art Omi
After being indoors most of the day we embraced the 98 degree heat and walked around Art Omi. We’ve mentioned Art Omi before when recommending some museums and sculpture gardens in the Hudson Valley. Some stand out pieces were Oliver Kruse’s “Clench”, Brian Tolle’s “Eureka”, Mel Kendrick’s “Jack #2”, and Sarah Braman’s “Day Trip”.
Stonykill Mill Open Studios
To hit one more place before we completely lost steam, we went to Stonykill Mill’s open studios. It’s such a wonderful experience to be able to get a glimpse of each artists’ process, inspiration, and work space.
To wind down from our jam packed day we went to The Aviary at Kinderhook Knitting Mill where some of the flavors of the apothecary next door are created from sound!
Sunday
To pick up where we ended during Saturday’s full day, Sunday we focused on mostly artist studios and some curated gallery spaces.
Ravenwood
We started our Sunday at our favorite spot, Ravenwood. You may recognize the name from our many blogs on maple syrup or florists in the area. The show at Ravenwood included Kat Howard, Re Jin Lee, Sienna Martz, Helen Dealtry, Caroline Burdett, Dana McClure, and Doris Josovitz.
WAAM (Woodstock Artists Association & Museum)
After Ravenwood we headed to WAAM to see the Radius 50 show.
Katherine Dufault
We then headed to some open studios! Starting at Katherine Dufault’s studio in Woodstock, we got to learn about her process and technique.
Karina Chu Mackenzie
We then went to Karina Chu Mackenzie’s studio. Gorgeous work, and so wonderful to speak with the artist about her inspiration.
Scott Ackerman
Loved meeting Scott and it was great to visit his barn/studio to learn more about his work.
Ann Ledy
We finished our weekend with Ann Ledy’s studio and a few others around Millbrook, NY.
Upstate Art Weekend is always so much fun and we can’t wait for next year! It’s such an amazing experience to learn about each artists’ practice.
