Construction continues on our latest home at Waterfalls Properties, TinkerBox. Designed as a combination guest house, furniture workshop, studio, and two car garage – this home was conceived as a car-lover’s dream retreat.
With an open plan living space ideal for entertaining, relaxing by a cozy fire, and an office studio, TinkerBox is a versatile space that provides options for both tinkering and rejuvenating – the perfect weekend escape!
One feature we are really excited about is the charred cedar used for the exterior siding of TinkerBox. We used a traditional Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban which preserves wood by charring it with fire. The process involves charring the wood, cooling it, cleaning it, and finishing it with a natural oil. The grain of the wood really stands out since the soft parts of the wood burn faster than the harder wood grain. The end result is a beautiful black finish, rich with texture.
After a several rounds of weekend wood charring, we now have enough wood boards to clad the entire house. Our team is currently working on putting the siding up, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the quality and finished appearance! Check out the photos below to see our progress so far…
