We had a fantastic time checking out some of the many artists, galleries and participants in Upstate Art Weekend last week! We took full advantage of the weekend and of the early opening hours on Thursday to visit as many different locations as possible. Today, we’re taking a look back at some of our stops and some of the many highlights.
Some of these exhibits are open for an extended period, so you still have opportunities to stop by and check them out!
at.land in Kingston
Kieran Kinsella exhibited his carved wood sculptures and furniture. We also loved the metalwork by sculptor Rodger Stevens.
Artport Kingston
ArtPort Kingston had a lot of fun with their exhibit this year, which was titled “Game On”. While we didn’t have the chance to play a round, we love the whimsy of this installation.
Bard MFA Thesis Presentation
The Bard MFA class of 2025 had their thesis presentation during UAW. We loved many of the artists included, but were particularly drawn to the work of artist Jenny Jisun Kim.
Pamela Salisbury Gallery
We fell in love with the Pamela Salisbury Gallery, a very cool space located in Hudson with a large central atrium space. There were a number of collections presented during the weekend, including a group exhibit titled WATER WORKS.
The gallery was also hosting an exhibit of Mark Milroy’s work that we were able to check out during our visit.
Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson
Located in Hudson, the Carrie Haddad Gallery represents local artists in the Hudson Valley. The piece below is by Shawn Dulaney – as you might know, we’re big fans of deep blue colors!
Joseph Maresca’s work is a stunning, colorful abstraction of architecture. We loved it!
Stephen Walling also presented his wall sculptures, which had such incredible dynamism and detail. We love how these change when you look from different angles.
We loved so many pieces at this gallery – it is definitely worth a visit!
While we were visiting the Turley Gallery in Hudson, we came across some open studios just above the gallery. We really enjoyed meeting both of these artists and their working studios! Nicholas Dalton’s smaller paintings were hung on the wall and looked great in collage. Philip Grbhardt was working on a larger piece set on an easel.
Upstate Gnarly
Ashley Garrett and Brian Wood have a studio space in East Chatham in which they hosted their first Upstate Art Weekend exhibit with Gracelee Lawrence and Courtney Puckett.
September Gallery
Taylor Davis is exhibiting at SEPTEMBER through mid-September. Stop by to check it out when you have a chance!
The School in Kinderhook
An art gallery in Kinderhook, The School had a fantastic exhibit of Nina Chanel Abney‘s work. Vibrant and dynamic, we loved the scale and variety of her work.
Studio Tashtego
This gallery is hosting a curated exhibition of work by mid-century American industrial designers Russel Wright and Mary Einstein Wright.
Whimsy Flower Farm / The Hangar
In the Accord area, we enjoyed the group show at The Hangar.
Ravenwood
After all the art, we were hungry! Luckily, Ravenwood was serving food all day. We stopped by for a delicious barbeque dinner and checked out the exhibit. The art was so amazing that we forgot to take photos!
Ruth Freeman
It is always a treat to see Ruth’s work! We loved these smaller pieces.
The Campus
The Campus is an awesome new venue in Claverack that is hosting their inaugural exhibit through the end of October. So fun to see such a site specific installation in this former school building.
Archipelago
Located in Germantown, this gallery presented the work of Edgar Calel, which was created in Comalepa, Guatemala in collaboration with his family and Mayan-Kaqchikel community.
Michael Robbins Studio
This furniture studio had some of their own pieces, along with the work of artist Kyle Nilan.
Mary McGill Gallery
Mary McGill Gallery presented the work of Jonathan Kline, who creates sculptural basketry and woven grids.
Army of Frogs Studio
This weird and wonderful studio in High Falls presented work by a number of local artists in a fun collection. The piece below was a large scaled installation resting in a corner of the space – so much detail!
