Contemporary Design: Expansive Glass
Expansive glass is a key feature in all of our homes at HV Contemporary Homes. From large glass windows and doors highlighting the view from the living room in the Lantern House to continuous windows surrounding an intimate window seat in TinkerBox, expansive glass enhances the “focus on the outdoors” that each of our designs embraces. Strategically placed windows and doors bring natural light into the home and provide spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
“Each home offers wonderful views, plenty of privacy and a focus on the outdoors
– the perfect weekend sanctuaries for busy people.”
Creek House
A perfect example of the use of expansive glass is on the first level of the Creek House. Situated on a hillside, the back of the house opens to a steep slope. Floor to ceiling windows along one edge of the living room draw the visitor toward the view of the rushing stream 100 feet below. Wrap around sliding glass doors from dining room to living room open onto the outdoor deck, nearly doubling the downstairs living space.
“The Creek House living room, dining room and kitchen are designed as one interactive space with expansive exterior glass walls which open up to increase the living area of the home by almost double.
Essentially, the outdoors becomes the living room.”
On the second floor, large windows give the sense of “living in a tree house… I love the feeling of waking up in the trees!
Lantern Ridge House
The Lantern Ridge House uses glass doors and windows to draw visitors inside as well as connect them to the natural landscape outdoors. Upon entering the Lantern Ridge House, one’s gaze is immediately drawn to the incredible view beyond. Thoughtful placement of windows at the end of a hallway or opposite your view as you enter the home provides the feeling of continuous space, again enhancing the focus on the outdoors – we consider these small design features “expansive” as well.
“The pass-through entryway draws visitors into the house,
while immediately providing a connection to their surroundings.”
In the main living space, large, seemingly continuous windows not only bring the outdoors in, but allow an abundance of natural light to enter the home. The Lantern Ridge House’s modern architectural style provides an elegant but simple backdrop that lets the views of the Shawangunk Mountains and Hudson Valley landscape take center stage.
“The U-shaped structure is carefully sited to optimize views of both the sunrise and sunset.
Near full-height windows bring in generous amounts of natural light, frame views of the outdoors,
and create a near seamless indoor-outdoor experience.” – Inhabitat
TinkerBox
Large windows, clean lines and an open floor plan emphasize contemporary living in this modern home. The use of expansive glass makes the upper level living space of this small one bedroom guest house seem more spacious than its actual size of 1260 square feet. Windows extend to the floor to give way to picturesque views of the surrounding wooded property.
An expansive window seat with built-in hidden storage anchors the primary living space while offering a relaxing place to take in the outdoors all year long.
“The home’s raised presence on the site creates a superior vantage point from the window seat
– a wonderful place to experience the beauty of the changing seasons!”
A fold away door off the kitchen opens up to a deck, outdoor fireplace, and scenic views of the Hudson Valley landscape.
“The fold away glass door can be easily pushed aside, creating unobstructed views of the surrounding
dense forest and continuous access to the outdoors.”
Contemporary design features such as expansive glass accentuate the focus on the outdoors, a theme that is integral to the design of all of our homes.
