Thinking about getting away this Columbus Day?
The Hudson Valley is the perfect destination for the long holiday weekend.
Columbus Day Weekend in the Hudson Valley
A weekend packed full of craft and design events, food festivals, and outdoor activities, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Hudson Valley. The cool October weather makes this a great time for outdoor Autumn Adventures like scenic hikes and pumpkin picking. It’s also one of the best weekends to appreciate the incredible fall colors of the Hudson Valley…prime time for some leaf peeping!
There are so many great events this Columbus Day Weekend, including one of my favorite events of the season – Field + Supply: a modern makers craft fair highlighting a variety of quality designers and studios.
Plus – it’s the weekend of our opening celebration for TinkerBox! (scroll down for details) With all these great options, Columbus Day Weekend is one of the best times to plan a visit to the Hudson Valley. So come up and see what all the buzz is about!
Field + Supply
Field + Supply is a weekend long design and craft fair showcasing offerings from designers, makers, and artisans featuring handcrafted goods and crafts. Created in 2014 by interior designer Brad Ford as a “ modern interpretation of a traditional arts and crafts fair”, Field + Supply has grown to include food and drinks from local purveyors as well as hands-on workshops and live music.
Field + Supply encompasses an impressive and highly curated selection of crafts ranging from handcrafted furniture to ceramics, textiles, lighting fixtures, and more. One thing that ties all of the offerings from these design studios together is their supreme quality.
This year Field + Supply has moved to the recently refurbished Hasbrouck House where additional parties and events will be held throughout the weekend. Events include a designer preview cocktail party and private dinner at Ravenwood Farm on Friday evening, a Meet the Makers Celebration at Arrowood Farms on Saturday evening, and a biscuit breakfast from Hasbrouck House’s new restaurant Butterfield’s on Sunday. Modern Homes at Field + Supply
While you are at Field + Supply, make sure you go by and see Jeff Serouya at his booth. Jeff is our realtor and will be showcasing his listings for modern homes in the Hudson Valley, including homes and properties that are currently available from HV Contemporary Homes.
When it came time to start thinking about furnishing our latest modern home, TinkerBox, we reached out to a few of the designers exhibiting at Field + Supply – such as Phloem Studio and Elijah Leed Studio – about how they could contribute. We wanted to incorporate furniture pieces that would fit in well with design principles used for TinkerBox and all of our homes – modern design and quality craftsmanship.
Phloem Studio
Founded by designer Benjamin Klebba, Phloem Studio handcrafts high quality contemporary furniture from natural materials. We selected Phloem’s Peninsula Chair with a walnut base and black leather. Here’s what Marica had to say about Phloem and their Peninsula chair:
“Ben Klebba is a very talented designer. I have been in love with the brass, leather, and wood detail on this chair since I first saw Phloem Studio at ICFF, so his work is something of a design inspiration – very excited to have the Peninsula Chair in our home.”
Elijah Leed Studio
For TinkerBox’s dining room table, our design team collaborated with furniture maker Elijah Leed Studio. We wanted to create an organic piece with ties to nature and the surrounding landscape of the Hudson Valley.
I mentioned in a recent post on TinkerBox’s design details, that we used a local mill to fabricate steps out of hardwood trees cut down directly from the property site. While visiting the mill to see the progress on the steps Marica found four large slabs of walnut that were cut from the same log and dreamed up the idea of designing a dining room table.
In order show off the beautiful natural walnut we’ve asked Elijah to keep the live edge in the center of the table and finish the outside edges to create smooth lines on the surfaces that engage with the user. For the connections between the slabs, wood joints will be used in one direction and brass joints in the other direction. The wood joints will join slabs end to end and the brass will join them across the live edge in the center.
